Key Largo and Islamorada, Florida Keys Update – First week of October
Visibility: 25 ft | Water Temp.: 86F | Current: None
Hi everyone,
Well, the first week of October has brought us a lot of wind, which of course causes waves, and makes it a little rough out on the reef. The wind was so high this Monday and Tuesday that we had to cancel the trips because it was sure to be very wavy with limited visibility. If we have winds higher than 20 knots, and it’s coming from the East, SouthEast or South, it really makes the sea conditions uncomfortable, and certainly more challenging than we are used to. All this wind is certainly the exception, and not the norm. We just haven’t had the chance to get out there very much, so there really are no great reef or diving reports to bring you!
Never fear, the weather report is much better for this weekend and we will be sure to bring you some reports and pictures from our adventures out to the wonderful reefs and wrecks of the upper Florida Keys. In the mean time, if you are thinking of visiting us this fall, be sure to take advantage of some of the incredible hotel rates we have from now until December 15th. Key Largo hotels are as low as $69.00 per night, and Oceanfront in Islamorada starts at $99.00. Combine that with the low fall airfare and you can certainly put together a quick 3 or 4 day getaway package and do some great diving. Check our packages and specials page for the latest deals we have to offer.
Until next time, here are a few pictures of the re-power we did on the Tropical Voyager earlier this year. We had to take our old motor out, ship a new one in from Texas. It does not sound like much but keep in mind that the motor and transmission weigh over 6,000 lbs. The crazy part was that the shipping company LOST the motor during shipping so it was late (by 6 days, it was in Oklahoma City) and once we finally got it, we had to drop it in and hook it up in record time. We literally sea trialed the boat at 11:30am for 45 minutes and then immediately drove it down to our dock for a 1pm charter! Talk about cutting it close! We left on time, and no one but the crew knew that we had just spent the last two and half days and nights putting the new motor in. Hope we don’t have to do this again any time soon!
